GUIDELINES FOR SCHOLARSHIPS, AWARDS & GRANTS:
All application material must postmarked no later than January 7th, 2005 and sent to:

A panel of impartial ACJS & Alpha Phi Sigma faculty members will judge all entries and the awards will be presented at the National Conference. If the judges deem the applicants have not met the standards set forth here, or feel they do not academically meet the level or work expected, no prizes will be awarded.
§ Applicants must be Alpha Phi Sigma members.
§ Applicants must be enrolled in an academic program within two semesters after receiving the scholarship. Applicant will produce proof of enrollment or acceptance into a program.
§ Scholarship monies must be applied to further student’s higher education.
All “papers” submitted for scholarships/awards must follow the format specified below:
· Cover sheet: A cover sheet with title of papers, student’s name, address, phone number, college/university attending, student status (undergraduate, graduate, doctoral), Alpha Phi Sigma Chapter name, Chapter Advisor, Chapter President and Chapter address.
· There should be no identification of the student anywhere within the “paper”, only on the cover sheet.
· Title page (separate from cover sheet) with the title of the paper.
· Abstract, Paper and Work Cited Page.
· Papers must be the standard 1” margins; double spaced (unless otherwise specified); 12 pt Times New Roman font.
· An original copy of the “paper/application” and a copy in Microsoft-WORD on a 31/2 floppy disc. If not available on a disc, then, five copies (in addition to the original)
SCHOLARSHIPS AND AWARDS OF EXCELLENCE
V.A. Leonard founded Alpha Phi Sigma in 1942. He received his Ph.D. in Criminology and Public Administration. The V.A. Leonard Scholarship was established in 1982 in honor and recognition of Dr. Leonard’s leadership and hard work in the field of Criminal Justice.
This Scholarship is based on academic achievement, professional recommendations, and extracurricular activities. The recipients will each receive a scholarship of $1,000 and a plaque. Applicants must
· follow the guidelines printed above.
· submit a paper on “My Conception of Alpha Phi Sigma”. Describe your conception of Alpha Phi Sigma and what direction you would like to see the Honor Society take in the future in approximately 7 pages. Followed by “Why I Deserve This Scholarship”. In approximately 3 pages, state why you feel you deserve the scholarship and how you intend to use the scholarship money.
· submit a copy of your most recent Transcript signed by your Chapter advisor.
· submit 3 letters of Recommendations, preferably from faculty
Regina B. Shearn Scholarship (One Undergraduate and One Graduate Scholarship)
Dr. Regina B. Shearn is the National Executive Director of Alpha Phi Sigma. Alpha Phi Sigma has grown considerably and continues to grow and thrive under her leadership and tutelage. The Regina B. Shearn Scholarship was established in 2001
Recipients will each receive a scholarship of $1,000 and a plaque . This Scholarship is based on academic performance, leadership and service, personal statement and evaluation reports. Applicants must
· follow the guidelines printed above.
· Academic Performance – submit most recent Transcript, signed by your Chapter advisor.
· Leadership and Service on the campus and in the community - submit a current copy of your Resume with leadership, service, honors/awards listed (on campus and in the community).
· Personal statement of educational perspective, purpose and objectives, approximately 6 pages.
· Evaluation reports from four individuals who are in a position to attest to the student’s performance, citizenship, and character.
Detective Cheryl Seiden Memorial Scholarship (One Undergraduate Scholarship)
Cheryl Seiden was a Detective with the Miami-Dade Police Department, Florida. Detective Seiden was the first female officer in the Miami Dade Police Department to be killed in the line of duty. Her husband, Mark Seiden, an attorney and a retired Sergeant from the Miami-Dade Police Department, has established this scholarship in his wife’s memory.
Recipient will receive a scholarship of $1,000. Applicants must

· submit a paper, approximately 15 pages on “The Evolving Role of Women in Law Enforcement.”
Public Agency Training Council Criminal Justice Scholarship (PATC)(One Graduate Scholarship)
The Public Agency Training Council is the largest privately held law enforcement training company in the nation offering a curriculum of over one hundred academy quality-training programs throughout the United States. PATC was founded in 1987.
Recipient will receive a scholarship of $1,000. Applicants must

· submit a paper, approximately 15 pages on “Why On-Going Training Programs are Essential to Law Enforcement.”
Commander James Carr Forensic Science Scholarship (One Undergraduate Scholarship)
Commander James Carr is the Commander of the Miami-Dade County Crime Lab. He is a dedicated forensic scientist who has worked his way through numerous sections of the lab and continues to lead the Crime Lab into the dynamic 21st Century. Timothy M. Martin is sponsoring this scholarship in Commander James Carr’s name. Mr. Martin, an attorney, is an AV Rated/Board Certified Civil Trail Specialist in Miami.
Recipient will receive a scholarship of $1,000. Applicants must

· submit a paper, approximately 15 pages on “The role of Forensic Science in a Specific Field of Criminal Justice.”
Best paper Competition Scholarship (One First-Place Undergraduate & Graduate; One Second-Place Undergraduate & Graduate)
First Place will receive a scholarship of $500 each and Second-Place will receive $250 each.

Undergraduate Topic: “A Contemporary Issue in Criminal Justice” (7-10 pages)
Graduate Topic: Graduate topic will coincide with the ACJS conference theme each year. (15 pages)
2005 Graduate Topic:“ New Challenges in Criminal Justice Education”
To nominate a student the advisor must submit:
· A Letter of Recommendation: From the advisor stating why the member deserves the award.
· E-Board Letter: Signed by all four Executive Board Members of the local chapter, with at least ¾ of the current local chapter member’s signatures, supporting this nomination.
· Transcript: A copy of the student’s most recent transcript.
· List: A list of community service, leadership, and professional activities that the student actively participated in.
· Student’s Resume
Advisor of the Year Award
Chapter members will write a detailed letter of recommendation, stating why your chapter advisor deserves this honor. The local chapter executive board, and at least three fourths of your chapter’s active members must sign this recommendation letter. Please include in your letter: the advisor’s rapport with the members, longevity, activities he or she has overseen or participated in, and his/her ability to motivate and lead. The winning advisor will receive recognition and a plaque.
Outstanding Chapter Goals AwardsUnity, Educational Leadership, & Community Service
The Goal Awards will be presented to the three chapters who have best shown exemplary efforts under each specific goal. An award of $250.00 and a plaque will be presented to each of the three winning Chapters. One application entitles the Chapter for consideration for all three Goal Awards, but may be awarded only one of these coveted Awards. Chapters must submit:
Outstanding Yearbook Competition· Minutes: A complete set of Minutes from the Chapter’s meetings, including E-Board meeting minutes.
· Supporting Materials: That may include, but is not limited to scrapbooks, press clippings, local Chapter’s Newsletters, Chapter’s appreciation letters, etc.
The Chapter with the most outstanding yearbook will receive an award of $100.00 and a plaque. To enter the Yearbook competition, chapters must:
Annual APS Community Service “Theme” Project Award· submit a letter of intent to the National Headquarters, within the due date.
DO NOT send the actual yearbook to the National Headquarters. Yearbooks must be brought to the National Conference for display & judging. Yearbooks will be judged on originality, creativity, content, and presentation.
· Yearbook may include: photographs, newspaper clippings, local chapter newsletters, flyers, appreciation letters, and other items which illustrate the chapter’s commitment to the ideals of Alpha Phi Sigma, throughout the year.
One award of $100.00 and a plaque will be presented to the Chapter with the most outstanding Theme project Poster and Report. Each year at the National Conference, the National Officers will select a “Theme” for the year. Chapters will choose at least one community project to follow that “Theme” throughout the year.
For 2005, the National Officers have chosen “Helping Underprivileged Children” Chapters entering this competition must:
· submit a letter of intent to the National Headquarters, within the due date DO NOT send the actual Poster and Report to the National Headquarters. Poster and Report must be brought to the National Conference for display and judging.
· create a Poster which depicts the activity(ies) of the ‘Theme”.
· submit a Report which contains: (1) a letter written by the agency’s staff projects coordinator, stating and confirming the activities performed by the chapter and (2) a letter signed by the Chapter Advisor confirming the involvement of all the members who participated, by listing their names.
Web Page Competition
An award of $100 will be presented to the Chapter with the most outstanding Web Page. All chapters with chapter webpages linked to the National Headquarters will be judged.

Conference Grant for Advisors :
Budget : – $2000.00 is budgeted for an Alpha Phi Sigma’s Chapter Advisors Grant. Eight awards at $250.00 will be given to recognize and encourage advisors; strengthen the chapter network; and promote the mission of Alpha Phi Sigma. These awards require a matching grant from other sources.
Purpose: The purpose of this award program is to recognize and encourage advisors of campus chapters, to strengthen the chapter network, and to promote the mission of Alpha Phi Sigma.
Description: Grants will be awarded for attendance at the Alpha Phi Sigma National Conference. Advisors will be eligible once every three years.Eligibility Criteria :
· Be a current active member and an advisor of an Alpha Phi Sigma chapter for least one year. (limit one advisor per chapter)
· Commit to at least a 2 year term as advisor after the National Conference
· Obtain a matching grant from the unit administrator or other campus source (e.g. provost’ office; student affairs; alumni association) or an APS alumni chapter or personal funds. (This grant and its match are not guaranteed to fund all expenses of the National Conference)
Procedures : File application at least the Summer/Fall semester before the Conference. Applications which meet eligibility criteria will be accepted on a first come, first serve policy and will be announced immediately. Applications will be accepted until grant money is depleted.

Grant for Chapter Programs
Budget: – $2000.00 is budgeted for an Alpha Phi Sigma’s Chapter Program Grant. All monies in the budget do not need to be distributed each year. Grant may be applied for more than one project. Specify each project in application and the amount of money requested. The maximum chapter award is $200.00.
Purpose: The purpose of the chapter program grant is to encourage chapters in their scholarly or service projects. Guidelines:· Chapter must be in good standing with the National Headquarters.(Annual dues must be up to date)
· Actively admit new members to National. (Minimum of 10 new members a year)
· Submit a description of the scholarly or the service project to be funded.
· Chapters’ projects will be reviewed and awarded based on a first come first serve policy
· Awards may vary; however the maximum chapter award is $200.00.
· Application must be submitted at least a semester before the funds are to be used
· After project has been completed, chapter must submit an article on the scholarly/service program, to be printed in the national Docket. (B&W photos may be included)
· Chapter may receive only one project grant every three years.
